As part of the Walkley Foundation’s Meta Australian News Fund, Radio 4EB, with the great support of the Community Media Training Organisation, organised a 6-week training for volunteers to become community journalists.

The aim of the course is to give journalistic tools to volunteers from a culturally and linguistically diverse background to become community journalists and to raise the media landscape in Australia. Around 20 participants were involved in the course and finished on the 17 November.

Radio volunteers across Australia were invited to be a part of the course, and volunteers from New South Wales, Victoria, and Queensland (including five volunteers from our partner at Arts Nexus in Babinda, 50 minutes south of Cairns) learnt from the foundations of radio journalism, interviewing, radio scriptwriting, and producing a current affairs radio story.

Now volunteers can produce radio stories for the national current affairs flagship program The Wire, and for grassroots perspectives radio program Fair Comment, to be relaunched in 2023.

Congratulations to all of the participants, and we look forward to hearing your stories on The Wire and Fair Comment!
