After a two-year break due to Covid, the Brisbane German Language School’s (BGLS) ‘Laternenfest’ celebrations returned in 2022 with a record crowd flocking to Radio 4EB HQ, Queensland’s only dedicated multilingual broadcaster on the afternoon/evening of Saturday June 11th!
German Radio 4EB Group member Sandra Mach Peck said “the perfect cool weather made the experience of sipping on mulled wine and hot soups, eating Bretzels and Leberkäse or Bratwurst with Sauerkraut, even more authentically German! Many children took the opportunity to make their own unique lantern while others browsed the second-hand German books and games stall. Musical entertainment was provided by Vic the accordion player throughout the evening. Best lanterns were awarded prizes which were handed out by Claudia Lüttringhaus (Head of German Consular Services) before the crowd gathered for a short stroll down to the park by the river where people showcased their lanterns while singing German Lantern Songs.
The Brisbane River with excellent city views to the Story Bridge and a magnificent tree lit by fairy lights, gave the procession the perfect backdrop. A great finish and wonderful addition for the community in and outside of Brisbane. The non-for-profit Brisbane German Language School is the only school in QLD offering German lessons on Saturday mornings in a school setting for children from four years of age. Adult classes are available on Saturday and during the week at various times and venues throughout Brisbane. Check out their website for more information at www.bgls.org.au and stay tuned to the Radio 4EB German program for next year’s ‘Laternenfest’!”
