Poland is a vibrant country in Central Europe with an area of 312,679 square kilometres and a mostly temperate climate. It is one of Europe’s oldest nations, with statehood dating back over a thousand years to the late 10th century under Duke Mieszko I. After periods of partition and occupation, Poland regained independence in 1918 following World War I.

From a challenging position in the late 1980s, the country has achieved remarkable economic progress over the past four decades and now ranks among the world’s top 20 economies by nominal GDP, with approximately 1.11 trillion dollars projected for 2026.

Poland has made significant global contributions through figures such as astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus, who revolutionised our understanding of the solar system, composer Frédéric Chopin, whose music remains beloved worldwide, and scientist Marie Curie, a pioneer in radioactivity research and the first woman to win a Nobel Prize. The country preserves one of Europe’s last primeval forests, the Białowieża Forest, a UNESCO World Heritage site that is home to the largest population of the European bison.

Its two major cities stand out: Warsaw, the capital, was largely destroyed during World War II but has rebuilt into a modern, dynamic hub of industry, innovation, and urban life. Kraków, the former royal capital, is renowned as a cultural gem with a historic Old Town, vibrant arts scene, and high quality of life.

Polish immigrants first arrived in Australia as early as 1803. Explorer Paul Edmund Strzelecki named Mount Kosciuszko, Australia’s highest peak, after Polish national hero Tadeusz Kościuszko. Post-World War II waves of Polish displaced persons, veterans, and refugees contributed to major infrastructure projects such as the Snowy Mountains Hydro-Electric Scheme and helped lay the foundation for Australia’s multicultural society. The Polish language belongs to the West Slavic branch of the Slavic language family and uses the Roman alphabet with additional diacritics.
