4EB'S OXYGEN Youth Radio Group

WHAT?
"... A Breath of Fresh Air..." is an independently produced documentary film which was produced with the Tony Manicaros Award of the National Ethnic and Multicultural Broadcasters' Council (NEMBC).  The documentary is to be distributed around Australia to encourage more young people to participate in ethnic community radio.

The film features one of Australia's most innovative and dynamic ethnic youth programs, Radio 4EB's 98.1 FM's multicultural youth show Oxygen which is produced by around 30 local young people. It focues on three Oxygen presenters who also present language specific youth shows on Radio 4EB FM 98.1 and provides an insight into the world that is ethnic community radio. The documentary also features Brisbane's Lady Mayoress Mrs Lisa Newman.

HOW?
The project was made possible by the Tony Manicaros Award of the NEMBC, access to professional filming and editing equipment by Arterial and support from Radio 4EB FM 98.1.  The film crew together with the Oxygen youth group motivated each other, with little previous film experience, a mimimal budget and under a tight deadline were able to put together the project to make a real difference to youth and ethnic community radio stations around Australia.

WHY?
The film was produced to instigate interest and awareness of ethnic community radio among youth to ensure that it has a future. Ethnic community radio is a support network, where peoples' contributions are valued, inspiring people to achieve anything they put their mind to. In "... a breath of fresh air ..." Radio 4EB FM 98.1's youth share this experience with you.

WHO?

Oxygen is produced by a group of around 30 talented, energetic and inspirational local broadcasters from a diverse range of ethnic backgrounds, who bring with them a wealth of cultural experience and knowledge. Many of the show’s presenters also present programs in other languages on Radio 4EB FM. The show is managed by a committee of seven members.

WHAT?
Each week, a new mix of around five broadcasters team up to present a dynamic program with fresh innovative content and the best popular music from around the globe. It is a show where young people can meet new faces, share their culture with everyone else and learn about and respect the differences in other people’s cultures.

WHEN?
Oxygen first hit the airwaves in 2003 and has been evolving over the last two years. The program is on air on Friday nights from 9.15pm on Radio 4EB FM 98.1.

WHERE?
The show is broadcast from the Radio 4EB FM studios under the Story Bridge in Kangaroo Point.

WHY?
Oxygen was developed in order to provide youth with another form of access to Radio 4EB FM. The program is one way Radio 4EB FM is introducing youth broadcasters to the station, providing opportunities for youth to participate in the mass communication process and a support network of people who encourage them to succeed.

HOW?
The Oxygen show is supported by the Radio 4EB FM Board of Directors, unlike most other programs at the station, which also require the support of financial members in order to be allocated airtime.
