Newsletter September 2009
On Sunday 16 August the group held its annual general meeting, with Board Member Mr Levale Lio in attendance to supervise the elections of the executive of the group. The following people were elected for another year:Convener:Lenie van Wyk, Vice-convener:Barthold van Hees, Treasurer: Ina Huig, Secretary:Bep Torkington
They are supported by the following committee members:Rpbert Broeder (also member of the Board), Con van Diest, Helen Dykstra, Beno Groothoff, Cees Huig, Greta Schimpf, Marco and Luukie Simons, and Rudy van Wyk. Once again we managed to get, just in time, our required number of members to be able to continue with our four broadcasts per week.
It is as always a struggle to get enough new members to replace the members we have lost during the year. But as most members are of advanced age, we unfortunately must say goodbye when they pass over from this life
As a Group we have been very active in the past, organizing get-togethers such as dances, held at the Dutch Club, a Car Rally organized by Lucy Bertens with morning tea provided at one of the stops by Bep Torkington. It is thanks to that Rally we became more involved and Rudy started lunches and Pig-on-the-Spit at Radio 4EB for our Dutch listeners which were very well attended. Once on the Board he organised the first “Getting to Know You” involving all the other Groups. This became an Annual Event which grew in size and popularity. We were helped on our stall by Cees and Ina Huig, representing the Dutch Community with AVOM and Holland Festival. It became so big that when Rudy received a grant from the Brisbane City Council the Board decided to take it over and renamed it “Carnivale”. Unfortunately with new insurance and Council rules, it was not feasible to continue with it. Although we are no longer involved with the organizing of functions, we do still support them by attending, having been on bus trips and many dinners etc., even providing the entertainment thanks to our male Artists and Ballet Dancers.
For two years running, we held the record of 4EB ticket selling for the raffle. Last year Marco Simons asked about a questionnaire amongst the listeners about the presentations and contents of our programs. He subsequently developed and printed this, and it was sent to all the members with their Renewal Notices. It met with a very good response. We are looking forward to another successful year of `keeping in touch with the Dutch.’
